We have PleinAir in our name because we were created by PleinAir Magazine, but we know that a lot of artists paint in various styles, mediums and subjects. Therefore, our competition is open to non-plein air work too. The goal is to award great art!
"This was a commission. However, when I saw her fiery hair, I immediately asked if I could take great liberties with the unruliness and flow. I completely changed the background, to contrast her wild and wonderful hair, and those crazy chickens! Commissions always press you to get a likeness. But, this piece was much more challenging for its far less formal approach and uniqueness! They are her pet chickens. After hearing about her personality and interests, I had to create this lively,  contemporary portrait. [I was] thrilled and extremely humbled…an award is such an uplifting element, we toil such long hours usually with little feedback. I'm very appreciative."
